Dear Parents/Guardians,

Welcome back and Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderful and meaningful holiday season with your families.

As we begin 2026, we are pleased to welcome our students back for another engaging semester of learning.  In the months ahead, we’ll be planning lots of fun, educational, and memorable experiences filled with renewed enthusiasm, opportunities, and growth. I am really looking forward to all the amazing things we will accomplish together!

Thank you for entrusting us with the education and well-being of your children. I am wishing you and your families a positive and productive start to the new year.

Sincerely,

Lisa Killebrew
Principal

Tater Tot Attendance Challenge Winners: Congratulations to Ms. Caffey's Class!

Ms. Caffey’s class narrowly beat out another class for the Sonic Tater Tot party. Way to go with all of the great attendance everyone had this first semester! A huge thank you to Sonic as they will be donating the tater tots for the party.

Beginning January 6th, the Tater Tot Challenge will begin, again. Keep up the great attendance and we look forward to another Tater Tot party at the end of the year!

Perfect Attendance and Behavior Challenge

Mr. Troell, from State Farm Insurance, will be gifting us with another four bikes to give away for the third nine-weeks. Two bikes will be given away for perfect attendance and two bikes will be given away to those students who have not had a color change to red. This means that students need to make good choices and not be on yellow for more than three days. As a way to promote better decision-making throughout the day, students on yellow status always have the opportunity to improve their behavior and earn their way back to green before the end of the day.

Outside Recess

Although the weather has gotten colder, we will still try to make it outside for recess. Please make sure that your child has appropriate outdoor clothing so they can enjoy their 30 minutes outside.

100th Day of School

It is hard to believe that on January 30th, students will have been in school for 100 days! At school, students will participate in 100th Day activities that their teachers have specially planned for them. Students will NOT be dressing up for the day but may wear a T-shirt or other clothing item that celebrates the 100th Day of School.

School Board Appreciation Month

January is School Board Appreciation Month. Gilmer Early Childhood staff and students would like to recognize and thank our board members for their dedication and hard work. We especially appreciate their continued support.

Board members serving Gilmer ISD are Mark Skinner, Kenny Southwell, Gloria King, Lula Johnson, John Dean, Jeff Murry, and Larry Montgomery.

Students Taking Medication

If your child has started taking a new medication or a higher dose of a medication, please notify Nurse Mindy of these changes. This information will be helpful for Nurse Mindy to have in the event that your child visits the Nurse’s Office and is not feeling well.

Attendance

Even at the Pre-K level, attendance is an important factor in your child's educational success. On a daily basis, GECC teachers are working with your child to develop foundational reading and math skills while fostering social and emotional competencies that will prepare your child for kindergarten and beyond. Like all Gilmer ISD campuses, GECC is subject to Texas's state compulsory attendance laws. We sincerely appreciate your efforts in ensuring your child's consistent attendance at school.

 Absences
If your child is absent for the day, be sure to call the front office at 903-841-7860 or send a ParentSquare message to Rebeca Cruz or Kadie Tucker, our school secretaries. To streamline the process for our Head Start families, the front office will forward your message to the family service workers.

Excuses
If your child is absent and/or goes to a doctor’s appointment please send a parent note or a doctor’s note with them when they return to school. This will allow us to mark the absence as “excused”. Notes may be submitted up to 3 days after an absence or an early pick-up. Excuses can be placed in your child’s folder or sent in a ParentSquare message to Rebeca Cruz or Kadie Tucker.
