Weather Closing Explanation

Posted Date: 1/09/25 (10:30 PM)

Since there have been numerous comments regarding school operations during inclement weather, I want to clarify the procedures and factors involved in deciding whether to close schools.
1. Gilmer ISD’s Mission
Gilmer ISD is a service organization, and we strive to remain open so that our students and families can depend on us for consistent opportunities to support their children’s education and well-being.
2. Factors Considered in Weather-Related Closures
A. Safety Concerns:
         1.   Road conditions: Assessing whether roads are safe for cars and buses.
         2.   Freezing temperatures: Evaluating their severity and duration.
         3.   Precipitation type: Considering whether snow, ice, or other conditions make travel hazardous, and assessing accumulation levels.
         4.   Utility operations: Ensuring schools have reliable power and other utilities to operate safely.
B. Other Concerns:
         1.   Student well-being:
           •   Providing consistency and routine.
           •   Offering a warm and safe environment during the day.
           •   Ensuring meals are served, which may not be possible at home during a closure.
         2.   Support for working families:
           •   Many families lack access to childcare and must work regardless of weather conditions. Schools provide a safe place for their children.
3. Addressing Misconceptions About Funding
This is incorrect for those who believe the district stays open to receive additional funding from the state. Gilmer ISD loses funding when we remain open on a “snow day.” Attendance rates typically drop significantly during such days.  If the district were to close, that day would be removed from the calendar, which means attendance for that day would not impact our state funding.  That day would be substituted with a calendar-identified snow day.
4. Procedures for notification
On the day before an expected weather event, if I believe there is no question regarding a closure due to safety concerns, I will notify the district before 10:00 p.m. on Parent Square, through social media, and on news stations KLTV and KTBB.  If I determine that road conditions need to be examined through the night, a team of employees will drive our roadways and I will decide by 5:15 a.m.  Notifications will occur through Parent Square, Social media, and news station KLTV and KTBB
